What is Agentic AI Software Development?

3 August 20265 min read

"Agentic" AI software development describes AI tooling that doesn't just suggest a line of code, but can take a series of actions - reading files, writing changes, running tests - toward a defined goal, with a human directing and reviewing the work.

Where it helps

Agentic tooling is best suited to well-specified, bounded tasks: a clearly described bug fix, a repetitive refactor, a feature with an unambiguous spec. The narrower and clearer the task, the more reliable the result.

Why oversight stays non-negotiable

AI-generated code can look plausible and still be wrong - introducing subtle bugs, security issues, or misunderstanding the actual requirement. Treating agentic output as a first draft that gets reviewed, tested and signed off by a human, rather than as finished work, is what makes it safe to use in practice.

This is also why traceability matters: every AI-assisted change should be visible in version control like any other change, attributable, and reviewable - not a black box.
